OC Transpo: New Flyer Battery-Electric Buses at Ottawa, Canada

OC Transpo has ordered New Flyer Industries Canada to deliver 124 Xcelsior CHARGE NG™ battery-electric buses in Ottawa. Ottawa plans to add vehicles to its zero-emission fleet, with delivery expected in 2026.

New Flyer, North America’s leading heavy-duty transit bus company, offers advanced products under the Xcelsior® and Xcelsior CHARGE® brands. They also provide infrastructure development through NFI Infrastructure Solutions™, focusing on safe, sustainable, and reliable charging and mobility solutions. With over 35,000 buses in service, 8,600 are electric motors and battery propelled, and 1,900 are zero-emission.

The Company has delivered over 1,100 buses to OC Transpo over 35 years, ensuring competitive delivery timelines for transit riders in Canada’s capital. The company’s next-generation electric solutions will continue to shape public transit in the city, with a follow-up order from OC Transpo highlighting their commitment to this goal.

New 40-foot battery-electric vehicles are being procured through a combination of municipal and federal funding, including contributions from the Canada Infrastructure Bank and the Zero Emission Transit Fund administered by Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada.

OC Transpo’s network of buses and the O-Train system plays a vital role in connecting communities across Ottawa, Ontario, and Gatineau, Quebec. This order marks another major step in delivering cleaner, quieter, and more efficient public transportation to riders across the National Capital Region.

These new buses build on OC Transpo’s initial order of 51 Xcelsior CHARGE NG buses, placed in late 2023—bringing the agency’s total investment in New Flyer’s electric bus platform to 175 vehicles. The purchase unded through a combination of local investment and federal support from the Canada Infrastructure Bank and Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada’s (HICC) Zero Emission Transit Fund (ZETF).
